What is Japanese Encephalitis?

Japanese encephalitis is a virus transmitted by infected mosquitos to humans via a bite.

What are the symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis?

The incubation period for Japanese Encephalitis is between 4 - 14 days.

In the majority of cases, the symptoms are mild fever and headache.

However, in 1 in 250 cases will experience a severe episode:

  • In children the dominant symptoms are gastrointestinal pain and vomiting.
  • High fever and headache.
  • Neck stiffness.
  • Disorientation, coma , seizures, spastic paralysis.

The fatality rate can be as high as 30% with severe episodes. Survivors may experience long term intellectual, behavioural and neurological effects such as paralysis, recurring seizures and speech difficulty.
